HIMALAYAN YOGA IN THE 21st CENTURY
Wim Hof, in an interview conducted by students of Oxford University, was asked how much the tradition of Yoga influenced his world-famous Wim Hof Method, he replied;
‘What i’m saying has been known for thousands of years...only we forgot about it’. He continued; ‘The way it is (perceived as just) exercise in the West, is like no, no, no, that’s not Yoga! there is much more..and for that we need to go to the depth.’
Himalayan Yoga is the Art of Super-Living or Full-Value Living as developed and fine-tuned by the Yogis of the Himalayas since several millennia B.C. This is why Yoga, as a future-proof and timeless system of True-Living, was recognised by UNESCO as an ‘Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity’ in 2016.
The Himalayas have been described as the ‘Silicone of Consciousness’ and the ‘Spiritual Storehouse of the World’. When we scratch below the surface we see that this blue zone of human evolution actually sits at the bedrock of human innovation in the 21st century.
It is well recognised that ‘tech titans’ from the likes of Apple, Google and eBay have all set out for the Himalayas in search of the teachings, more specifically, the former residence of Himalayan Yogi; Neem Karoli Baba. Steve Jobs is well documented as being hugely influenced by Paramahansa Yogananda, a teacher in the tradition of Himalayan Yoga, in-turn earning him the title ‘Trillion Dollar Yogi’.
Jobs had read Yogananda’s Autobiography of a Yogi as at the age of 17 and then re-read it once a year until his passing. It was said to be; ‘the only book on his iPad’ and influenced Jobs to the point that he requested copies of Autobiography to be distributed at his memorial service which took place at Stanford in 2011. Steve Jobs’ own biographer, Walter Isaacson, revealed that ‘He had the incredible realization that his intuition was his greatest gift, and he needed to look at the world from the inside out,’. All influences which arose from the teachings of Himalayan Yoga.
